Valeria Cherchiwas born in a small Sardinian village where she grew up and lived till the age of 19. Then she moved to Rome to study Industrial Design. After her BA she spent some time in Edinburgh and she is currently based in London attending her MA in Fashion Photography."

“The memory of my childhood is for me unbelievably vital. It is an explosion of strong and pure feelings, smells, tastes, fear and nightmares, colors, curiosity, daydreams, the countryside, the smell of the mow, the incense in the church, the coolness of the floor... I am deeply grateful to my family for childhood they gave me.” She told me oneday…

Since when do you learn Photography?
I've always liked taking pictures as memories of my life but i've started looking at photography in a different way about four years ago.

What is your reason to do Photography?
I've started cause of the influence of my aunt, sister and a dear friend of mine. Also, I've always wanted to paint art but I am totally hopeless at, so i tried to turn my creativity into photography.
Now I can say that photography is what I am, there is no reason, it is just the biggest part of my self.

What does it feel to make Photography?
It depends on the mood. We can always feel something, this is the important think to make you feeling alive.

What do you want to share through your works?
my feelings, my dreams, my memories.

Why you still choose film?
I like the whole process. I like the confidence i must have in your skills, the waiting, the surprise, the editing, the colors, the grain... I am pretty regular in my habits, i don't like changing lot of different cameras but sometimes i feel the need to shoot digital as well :)

Your biggest dream?
To be a successful fashion photographer, if not to fly with no fear or to be forever 23 years old!

Who inspired you?
Lovely people i meet in real life - people i meet in movies - musicians - well-known and emergent photographers...

Now, what do you think of your own artwork? tell me about your works..
They made me the same question during the interview for my MA. I couldn't find an answer sorry :) I just need to grow up so much!

What’s your next project?
To start my courses and make the most out of it! Lot of news are coming but let's see what is going to happen :)

EVELYN PRITT

Secangkir teh tentang Evelyn Pritt.

Waktu kecil seperti apa?
Waktu kecil main terus dan susah belajar, setiap belajar ngantuk hahaha

Lahir dimana?
Jakarta

Nama orang tua?
Hahahaha.. Alex & Sylvia

Dulu sekolah dimana?
Sekolah di SD, SMP, SMA Tarakanita, kuliah di Universitas Pelita Harapan, ambil jurusan Desain Komunikasi Visual. Setelah lulus kerja sebagai web designer.

Apa yang kamu sukai dan tidak?
Suka: Laut, bintang, pohon, teknologi, optical illusion, lampu, grid, pattern

Ceritakan tentang kotamu..
Jakarta kota yang berantakan. Tapi kalau malam (diatas jam 10) lumayan ok.

Masih pake FM2-mu?
Masih. Kamera perang nih, tahan banting.

Pernah menggeluti media berkarya yang lain?
kalau pernah apa?
Web design & graphic design

Apa yang dirasakan beda?
Proses kerjanya beda banget.

Apa rasanya ketika berkarya?
Happy!

Wah, banyak.
Elaine Constantine http://www.elaineconstantine.co.uk/
Philip-Lorca diCorcia http://www.thecollectiveshift.com/show/portfolio/diCorcia/
Erwin Olaf http://www.erwinolaf.com/
Massimo Vitali http://www.massimovitali.com/
Gue suka karena style foto mereka masing2 kuat sekali. Biarpun waktu pembuatan foto2nya udah lama, gambarnya tetap keinget terus.

Menurutmu bagaimana karyamu sendiri?
Banyak eksperimen.

Kalo nemuin sendiri sih belum pernah kayaknya yah.

Kalau udah gak bisa moto lagi, kamu mau apa?
Jadi apa aja yang penting happy.

Project selanjutnya?
Belum dimulai :P

The environment and people around me inspired me. They are my topics most of the time.

“Tell me about Taiwan....”
“Taiwan is the most beautiful island in Asia. This island was enabled by honest and friendly natures of people in Taiwan. Not to mention the most well-known food and landscape, one of the biggest attractions here is the unique sensibility in art. This year ART TAIPEI's project "Made in Taiwan" gained many international viewers' attentions.
Our artists' works illustrate our notions of the country. I hope that artists in Taiwan will gain more opportunities to participate in the foreign art market in the future “
“I think it just really nice”

“Any interesting experiences when you make artworks? tell me...”
“For me, each individual experience of work is unique and interesting. It always brings me to "arrive" at another"place" via the childish contours and bright colors that popped out of my work. In "there" I talk to them, and it provides me with a new way of looking at the world around them.”

INTERVIEW WITH KARA ANDARINI

by Larasya Nayenggita

One afternoon, near the setting sun, I met a young female artist. A friend that was born with a name of KARA ANDARINI or Kara for short. Aged 22 years old, likes adventure and do things random such as watching Family Guy TV series at night, accompanied by a cup of hot tea surrounded by the cold weather of the Flower City; we had a talk about her creative process.

Hey Kara! What are your days filled with nowadays?
Hey there! I am currently busy thinking about my final project, but mostly spent thinking and planning on what to do after graduating, hahaha!

Not busy walking around? I heard that you like to go backpacking.
I really like to travel, but so far I’ve only backpacked to Jogja. There’s one time I went hitch hike to Pantai Baron, I almost stuck there ‘cause there is no transportations to go home at all. So fun! Haha

Getting lost during backpacking makes it even more fun!
Hahaha, of course! That is where the challenge starts. I also like to have an afternoon walk or got into a train from Bandung – Jakarta. I like to observe the changes that happen from the atmosphere of Bandung, which are mostly greeneries to the very crowded and polluted of Jakarta.

Oh, really?
Ihh! (Hitting the interviewer, but kidding)

Would you prefer to stay in Jakarta or Bandung after you graduate?
I think I will stay in Bandung. The atmosphere supports me to make art.

Walrus, sea creatures, organic shapes, I can see you have a very tight connection to the nature. Is it a personal experience or just a form of appreciation?
Both. When I was a kid, my dad introduces me to the nature. I remember, every Saturday and Sunday, my dad often asks my sister, my mom and I to go to Puncak. Going through the pine trees and hiking (then I found Kara in silence, thinking back to her childhood memories and smiled) ya, maybe those influence my admiration to nature. And I think, the most beautiful shape and color is created by God, from nature.

What about Alam “mbah dukun”?
Oh my, Alam “mbah dukun” would be the dangdut groupies’ problem. Speaking about Alam “mbah dukun”, how is he nowadays? Haha!

I think he turned into a surgeon. Oh, what about that little kid that I often found around your artworks? Who is she?
That little kid is a metaphor of little me that tries to deals with her fear of loneliness and awkwardness.

Since when do you realize you like to draw?
I think since elementary school. I like to do colorings in coloring books, using crayons that the packaging has Pak Tino Sidin picture on it, hahaha!

Wow, you’re good in coloring! I can’t even wear proper lipstick
Haha it’s okay! I can’t even wear lipstick huhuhu, very shy.

Yay, same as me! Oh, can you please tell me how did you get into interior design before?
I used to be interested in anything related to home decorating and that sort of stuff. Since I was a kid, I like to read my dad’s books about buildings, houses and interiors.

But?
After I went into FSRD ITB, on the first year you got a chance to learn everything, and explore art in general. So I found myself interested in art and felt that it suits me best as compare to design faculty.

What activities that helps you in making art?
I went through a lot of National Geographic (magazine and TV shows), and looking back to biology books during High School. Also the activities of ‘right-click’ and ‘open-new-tab’ the whole day also inspired me. That’s the privilege to live nowadays where everything is easy and instant, hahaha!

Can you list the artists that inspired you a lot?
Conrad Roset, Egon Schiele, Ay Tjoe Christine, Fuco Ueda, Daniel Egneus, Agus Suwage and sketches of biologists or naturalists like Ernest Harckl and Charles Darwin.

Lastly; golden, pearl and diamond words?
“Success is a journey, not a destination.” And “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” - Neale Donald Walsch

INTERVIEW WITH SYENNIE VALERIA

Hujan baru saja berlabuh. Matanya tajam menatap secarik kertas. Tangannya mengayunkan kuas yang terbalut cat berwarna merah.

“Ceritakan padaku tentang karya-karyamu, Syennie” aku bertanya padanya.

INTERVIEW WITH JORDAN MARZUKI

Interview by Rukii Naraya

Tell me, who is Jordan Marzuki? Your real name, place of birth, where you grew up? What’s your childhood like?
My real name is Jordan Marzuki, but my official identification stated I was born with a name of Jordan without family name because the system that time was weird (as if now is not?). Jakarta, September 16, 1987. Just like most of the kids; I fight, break the principle’s office window and pulling classmate’s skirt.

Since when do you learn art?
When I was still in kindergarten, I really like to mess up with rooms. One time, I found a big sketchbook size A2, with sketches of face, machines and naked people. I was in kindergarten and only seen simple drawings of my friends, that was the first time I seen a realist drawing. Ever since, with my curious heart, I tried to follow the style that is drawn on the sketchbook, that’s when I started to sketch. Oh and that sketchbook belongs to my dad.

What is your reason to do art?
I remember, I was in 4th grade; my math teacher scolded me because I like to draw in class, and told me “do you believe in praying to statues? Why do you draw weird faces of people” From drawings we earn opinions and attention. Isn’t that what we need? Attention.

What does it feel to make art?
Like an after feeling of punching someone you hate. Maybe it is the same feeling as Jake LaMotta hits Sugar Ray till knock out.

What are your preferable mediums?
It all depends on the needs, but nowadays I mostly focus on applying it through product design.

Why is that?
Seeing people wearing your work in daily basis, felt real good, and I think it is easier to send the message / statement that I would like to share.

Your artwork has that ‘dark’ feeling, is there anything behind it? What are you trying to show through your artworks?
Hahaha! To be honest, I don’t understand what’s in me. If it is a flashback of my memories, none of it is bad during my childhood, too happy actually. But then, when I look back at my childhood drawing archives, I think it is plain because I like something different, ugly, weird, watched too many B class movie that offers violence and sexuality. My parents gave me freedom. Contents like violence and sex are not sex is not bad for kids, Barbie and Ken is way more dangerous.(See attachment of my childhood illustrations)

How did Balletcats come about?
Honestly, this is a hard question. If I want to explain it, it’s like a director advertisement of artsy moviemaker. The Balletcats was created when I was in college days, and at the same time I was working full time job as a designer in Leboye Design, Jakarta. Call it as an escapist or a drug to keep making art and communicate because I have difficulties in communicating through talking with people, even until now. In the world of The Balletcats, I raise a personal opinion on loving animals, homosexuality, violence in aesthetics, human and animal bullshit relationship, zoo folia, pedophilia, greedy and more, which packaged in a comical way. I never force to know who will be my target audience, because from the result itself, the audience will then create itself.

Now, what do you think of your own artwork?
I always want to make it better or change it 180 degree, or vanish it. Always never get enough of it, hahaha!

What’s your next project?
Full length film or solo/collaboration exhibition. Hopefully.

INTERVIEW WITH ZINDY AMALIA

by Fadhly Muhammad

How did you get yourself into the world of drawing?
Started quite early. I was 10 or so when I started drawing courses, but it was earlier age when I realized I love drawing :)

What do you like the most about it?
One thing I like about drawing, you get to be whoever you want to be, and say whatever you wish to say. It’s like a media without restrictions.

Describe your process to create a drawing and what kind of materials you prefer to use?
Pencils, any kind of papers, wacom, Photoshop, acrylic, drawing pen, markers. All good.

Influences?
Concept wise, I’m into Escher and Dali.
Style, I love James Jean’s, details, I love Nicholas Digenova, Jean Honore Fragonard’s, Monet, Seurat Eccentricity and content, I love Yuko Shimizu and Audrey Kawasaki.
Feel, I love Lykke Li’s, chick on speed

Tell us a bit about your mural project on 365 eco bar…
Well the concept is about human and what we do to the earth and what will we cause if we keep doing it. It is simply the aftermath to what we do. You reap what you sow. In this case we created an image of mutants and other creatures, that happens to be our perception on a new level of evolution. There’s also a message of how human and the nature should live side by side, and not against each other.

On Elle Magazine, you drew a girl and a chihuahua, what was going on your mind when you created it?
Elle magazine. That’s Kenzo’s 2011 spring / summer collection I drew over there. Did a little research before i started drawing, apparently Antonio Maras the current Kenzo designer did some cross cultural design on the dresses, and the chihuahua was a representation of different cultures also, as according to the history, the breed’s the ancestors came from mexico, but in the other hand, some said it’s from Egypt, and also brought to somewhere in europe. as per today, it’s just everywhere. Beside, it is also the niche symbolization of fashion today, along with french bulldog any other dog breed.

Name your top 3 bookmarked sites…
Facebook, deliciou.us, the fox is black

What would you do if you’re not an artist?
A graphic designer. Or a fraud.

Future / current projects?
Nothing much. mostly graphic design projects. But I am now trying to come up with a drawing for a friend’s tatt. That’s not a project rite?

NOPAY!

Interview oleh Rukii Naraya

NOVITA THERESIA.
“OH! ya ya untung ga dipanggil no live”, Ia berseloroh tentang namanya.

Aku memperhatikan beberapa karyanya. Kemudian terbesit suatu pertanyaan.

“Apa hanya digital mediamu?”
“Udah pernah mencoba media apa aja?”

Dia benar-benar tertawa lepas. Matanya berbinar.

“hmmmm .. mungkin bukan paling wahid, mungkin paling bahagia yah”
“Mungkin Typeface saya”
“Belum dipublish di blog”
Coming soon

“Bagaimana menurutmu dengan karyamu sendiri?”
“Hmmm…”
“Saya nggak pernah tau karya saya bagus atau tidak sih, buat saya yang penting yah bikin aja, mau seaneh apapun yah bikin aja”
“Hahahaha”

What is your biggest dream?”
“Hmmmm .
“Hahahha .wish wish wish…”

“Apa projectmu selanjutnya?”
“Waduhhh”
“Rahasia!”
“Ada deh, boleh ga?”
“Hahahaha”
